Elementary creator Rob Doherty is exec producing the project alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman under their deal with Lionsgate Television, which is the studio.
The series is a contemporary take on the monster hunter Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, who uses his uniquely inquisitive mind working alongside his ex, relentless FBI special agent Mina Harker, to solve New York City’s most harrowing cases, per the logline.
Van Helsing is the latest procedural project in the works at CBS, which Deadline revealed earlier this week was developing another adaptation of German detective drama series Einstein.
Lee is the author of books including The Great Mistake. In addition to Lockerbie, he is co-creating a limited series about a Las Vegas heist with Reservation Dogs’ Sterlin Harjo for FX and adapting his book High Dive for the screen with Eric Roth.
It is the latest adaptation of Van Helsing into a TV series. Syfy aired a fantasy horror series based on Bram Stoker’s creation, known as a vampire slayer, monster hunter and archnemesis of Dracula, for five seasons starring Kelly Overton. EastSiders creator Kit Williamson is developing a series based on Jason Henderson’s Alex Van Helsing trilogy, featuring 14-year-old descendent, with AGC Television.
There was also the 2004 action horror film starring Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing alongside Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerious, directed by Stephen Sommers.
Doherty is represented by UTA. Beverly is represented by UTA, Lenore Entertainment Group and Hansen Jacobson Teller. Timberman is represented by UTA, Lenore Entertainment Group and Del Shaw Moonves. Lee is represented by CAA, 42 and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
