I guess I should give my point of view as a player for the opposing side of the game in question:
I simply don't believe this was a tactical pause; a tactical pause to me is one which a team takes with the purpose of preparing strategy. This seemed more like an 'emergency', and I fully believe Puppey's tweet saying that LoH's mouse stopped working (it has happened on more than one occasion).
Now, here's the problem: Even though the intention of the pause was NOT one of a tactical nature, it ends up resulting in it regardless. You cannot NOT react to what you see on the screen during a pause, so the result will inevitably be that XBOCT, being the one in trouble in the situation, is able to escape the situation with the help of his team. Yes, we felt cheated--yes, we felt it was unfair. But was it Na`Vi's fault?
I can only come up with one good solution for this: disallow players in competitive games from pausing themselves, but allow them to request a pause in all-chat, after which an admin can choose to give it, given that there's no on-going action which would be interrupted. This has been applied before at The International--and pauses were only allowed if they were of a technical nature. However, the game currently doesn't allow it outside of VALVe controlled games, as broadcasters/unassigned observers in the game CANNOT pause the game; only players can. I could easily see VALVe patching this in, and putting it as a setting which can be used in private lobbies for competitive games.
For that pause system to work, however, every competitive game would need a competent, constantly aware admin to allow the pause. That admin must determine in the individual situation if it seems reasonable, and make the decision as quickly as possible to minimise the impact on the game.
Actually (and yes, I am naïve sometimes, but I believe in a good competitive spirit inside the scene), the only 'tactical pauses' that I recall seeing are those which teams have taken immediately after the drafting is finished in order to discuss laning / game plan in more detail. For some reason, seemingly no one (at least to my memory), has really brought that up as an issue--but isn't it?
As a final comment, I see quite a few people support the 'HoN pause', which counts down 3-2-1 both before and after the pause. However, in my opinion, that doesn't solve the problem. If a fight is going on, it will be affected--regardless of whether it is delayed 3 seconds or not.[/i]
