Same castle, you're just entering from the back instead (which was either left untouched for some reason or, more likely, been fixed/refurbished/whatever by the FF crew). It's likely much of the KH1 incarnation was Maleficent's alterations rather than part of its initial design (BBS-era and such).

Villain's Vale appears for the first time in Kingdom Hearts II. After learning that Maleficent was killed, Pete showed up here, to see if it was true. He found an empty fortress, but was soon greeted by Diablo and a resurrected Maleficent. She begins to use it as a base of operations, even though now there are only two in her league.
