The participating teams at 2015 World Championship will soon be all determined. We'll introduce format of this year's format, for your better understanding.
As we announced earlier, the worlds will consist of two stages:
Group stage
Within 2 weeks 16 teams will play double round-robin BO1s, i.e. each team face each other team in their group at twice non-consecutive BO1s. 16 teams are divided into 4 groups, each group will have 12 regular matches, and possible tiebreakers.
Knockout Stage
BO5s, including quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.
Changes from 2015
-
Group stage draw will have live broadcast.
-
Pot 1 consists #1 CN/KR/EU/NA.
-
Pot 3 consists #3 EU/NA and 2 Wildcards.
-
The rest is in Pot 2, i.e. CN/KR #2/#3, NA/EU #2, LMS #1/#2
-
Each group contains 1 Pot 1 team, 1 Pot 3 team, and 2 Pot 2 teams. No two teams from same region may enter the same group.
-
Drawing will put teams into A-B-C-D-A-B-C-D-... group by order. Only after all teams from the previous Pot is decided will the next pot begin. However, if a team is not possible to enter a selected group, the next group will be chosen. For example, a KR team is chosen 9th and should enter group A, but there's KR team in both group A and B, so this team would enter group C.
Additional rules will be revealed fully before the draw begins.
Knockout stage matchups
To give teams incentives to be first in their group, we'll introduce randomness in quarterfinal match-ups while retaining "group first places always face group second places". Quarterfinal draws will be held live immediately after last day of group stage.
This year's different, teams will not know their Round of 8 Opponents definitely when group stage is still going on.
**#1 and #2 from the same group won't enter the same half.## i.e. Group stage match-up won't be repeated at least until the finals.
(I'll modify the following from the source without changing its meaning since you shouldn't need the picture to confuse you, the picture is only one of the possible draw scenarios).
Quarterfinals would be decided as follows.
-
First, four #1 from each group will be randomly selected into QF #1 to #4. (#1 and #2 in upper half)
-
Second, four #2 from each group will be randomly selected, but had to enter next match-up when the original one is at the same half with their group #1: e.g. if A2 get chosen first but A1 is in QF #2, A2 can't enter upper half and has to enter QF #3, if C2 get chosen next and C1 is not in upper half, C2 will enter QF #1 since #1 is available.
-
After the quarters, semifinal will automatically be decided according to each team's halves.
